11.20.09: Lit From Within Release Date Announced.

Lit From Within

"Lit From Within“ is the third full-length release from Winnipeg's The Paperbacks.  The new double album, Produced by Jaret McNabb (Projektor “Tired Atlantic South” EP, The Paperbacks “An Episode of Sparrows”)  is being released on January 12, 2010, on the Parliament of Trees label

On their new release The Paperbacks continue their exploration of powerful and unlikely lyrical topics. While their previous CD, “An Illusion Against Death,“ questioned the role of art in the life of the artist, “Lit From Within” examines more fully the motivations behind art and activism, their parallels, and the effect of each on the health of the practitioner. Opener Good Lives (For Bad Reasons) looks at a moment of crisis for a veteran social activist (“You’ve had a hard life for noble reasons, and it’s not clear what that’s worth…”), and from there, the 32 song set travels through distractions, addictions, death, abuse and faithlessness to ultimately find its way back to a sense of strength, purpose and recommitment. The sonic adventurousness is not lost beneath the intensity of the subject matter; the band, propelled by McNabb’s masterful production, takes incredible risks and pushes hard in as many directions as the running time allows

“Lit From Within” marks the debut of the Paperbacks new line-up. Remaining from the original group are songwriter Doug McLean, and  bassist Jaret McNabb. They are joined by guitarist Kevin Andrechuk, drummer Corey Biluk and Kevin McLean on keyboards. "Lit From Within" also features an impressive cast of guest musicians including Jahmeel Russell (Projektor, Kittens), Alison DeGroot, and Rosalyn Dennett (both members of Oh My Darling), Mike Koop (The Bonaduces, The Kicker), Andrew Filyk (Anthem Red, The City Champs) and Ian LaRue.

08.02.09: A Bunch of Shows

Friends. We have a bunch of shows this month; 4 in our hometown of Winnipeg (Every Tuesday night in August at the Lo Pub, 14 or 15 songs each show with no repeats, almost 60 songs in total over the 4 nights!), with a couple in Calgary, Edmonton and Regina at the end of summer to top it off. We'll be announcing our plans at the end of the summer in terms of releases (releases, plural? yes!), and, hey! Sorry, didn't mean to talk about myself here without letting you get a word in. How are you? How's your summer been? Is the cast off yet? How's the book coming?

Check out the SHOWS page for details on the performing. The performances, I mean. Us. Playing. Check back here at the end of August for great stuff. Have an amazing remainder of summer!

10.06.08: Paperbacks record a lot.

What are we doing? Well, since you asked...The Paperbacks are hunkered down in the "studio" finishing off the follow-up to last year's "An Illusion Against Death". The new album will feature32 songs across two CDs. Lyrics are currently up in the lyrics section. In addition to this ridiculous project, we will at some point be putting the finishing touches on an EP that we had planned to release well over a year ago, but whose time just never came. There are other projects in store, too, insuring that your standard 4-year wait in between albums will be surgically shortened to a tidier number!

05.21.08 Paperbacks Doing All Sorts of Stuff.

Seriously, we have so much going on right now, but my personal handlers fear cursing our astounding productivity by talking about it online. Or they want to time the announcement out so it's all shocking, like we're Radiohead or something. So I guess the news is, trust us, we have a cavalcade of absurdity that will be rolling its way towards you in the extremely near future.
